Psalm 23 is a favourite Psalm for many. Unfortunately, it is often only read at funerals. It is so much more than a comforting word for the grieving believer.
The message of this Psalm is significant as it expresses confidence in the Great Shepherd of our souls. Two words describes Him and provide us thoughts to ponder:
A. SHEPHERD. Who is the Shepherd the psalmist speaks about? The psalmist explains that He is involved in the lives of people – He provides safety, provisions, nourishment, refreshing, guidance, peace, comfort and protection. He is Almighty Eternal God, revealed to us through Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd of John 10.
B. ENOUGH. He is enough! When we know the Shepherd we need nothing more. He alone satisfies the soul and gives everything we need for life and godliness. When we know Him we have peace and even death do not scare us. Indeed, the Shepherd is enough!
We can therefore eco the words of Paul in Philippians 4:12-13: “… I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. I can do all things through Him who gives me strength.”
